Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effects of different molasses rates (0 %, 2 %, and 4 %) applied at different stages (early and late) on the nutritional value and silage quality of triticale (X Triticosecale Wittm.) harvested as a second crop after cotton in Şanlıurfa conditions. The silage materials harvested at early (spike initiation) and late (dough maturity) periods were ensiled in 1.5-liter glass jars with four replicates, with the addition of molasses at different levels (0 %, 2 %, 4 %). The effects of adding molasses at different periods (spike initiation and dough maturity) and at different levels (0 %, 2 %, and 4 %) on the nutrient composition, pH value, ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N/TN), lactic acid (LA), volatile fatty acids, and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) of triticale silages were investigated. In this study, the addition of molasses was found to statistically significantly increase dry matter (DM), acetic acid (AA), and lactic acid (LA) values (P<0.001), as well as crude protein (CP), metabolic energy (ME), and IVOMD values (P<0.01). Additionally, the addition of molasses significantly decreased NDF, NH3-N/TN, butyric acid (BA), and pH values (P<0.001). In this study, it was statistically significant (P<0.001) that with the progression of the vegetation period, the DM, ADF, NDF, pH, and AA values of the silages increased, while the CP, IVOMD, NH3-N/TN, BA, and LA values decreased. When all the obtained data were evaluated, it was concluded that silages prepared from early-stage (spike initiation) triticale crops with 2% and 4% molasses addition generally had good quality silage characteristics.
