Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the nutritional values and silage quality of field pea (Pisum arvense L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) plants grown as second crops under Şanlıurfa conditions, prepared by adding different levels (0 %, 2 % and 4 %) of molasses at different periods (early and late). The forage crops were harvested at the beginning of flowering in the early period and at the beginning of encapsulation in the late period and ensiled with different levels (0 %, 2 %, 4 %) of molasses in 1.5 liter glass jars in 4 replicates. The effects of molasses supplementation at different periods (early and late) and at different levels (0 %, 2 %, 4 %) on nutrient composition, pH value, ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N/TN), lactic acid (LA), volatile fatty acids and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) values were investigated. In the study, it was found that dry matter (DM), pH and acetic acid (AA) values of the silages increased as the vegetation period progressed, whereas NH3-N/TN, HP, LA and butyric acid (BA) values decreased (P<0.001). It was found that DM, crude protein (CP), Fleig score (FP) and LA values of molasses added groups were higher and pH, NH3-N/TN and BA values were lower than the control groups (P<0.001). It was concluded that the silages made from early period forage pea and barley crops to which 0 %, 2 % and 4 % molasses were added and late period field pea and barley crops to which 2 % and 4 % molasses were added had quality silage characteristics and could be used as quality roughage in ruminant feeding.
