Abstract

Although Amaranthus palmeri S.Watson species has recently entered Turkey, it poses serious risks for biodiversity and agricultural production due to its high adaptation and spread rate. In our country, it was first detected in the east of Adana, Hatay and Osmaniye regions, and in time it spread in the Mediterranean, Aegean and Southeastern Anatolia regions. Over time, this plant species has created a significant density in agricultural areas. As a result of the observations made in Batman, Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Mardin, Siirt and Şanlıurfa provinces recently, it has been found that the prevalence of this species is constantly increasing. it has been observed that this invasive species is found in very different habitats such as pastures, agricultural areas (sunflower, wheat, cotton, corn, tomato, etc.), non-agricultural areas, waste areas and roadsides. As in the rest of the world, it has been determined that this species is especially dense in corn cultivation areas in the region. The first observations so far indicated that A. palmeri could become a significant risk for agricultural production in the region. This review has been prepared to draw attention to the risks related to the subject. For this purpose, the literature on A. palmeri was reviewed in detail and the possible risks of the plant in general for our country and in particular for the southeastern anatolia region were discussed.
