Effect of Wood Vinegar Application on the Herbage Yield and Some Forage Quality Components of Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa pratensis) in Early Growth Stage

Abstract

Wood vinegar (WV) has attracted extensive attention because of its multiple benefits in soil improvement. However, the effects of wood vinegar on the growth and development of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) are not clear. This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of different rates of wood vinegar on the herbage yield and forage quality parameters of Kentucky bluegrass in early growth stage. In the experiment, four different rates of WV (WV0: 0% [control], WV2: 2%, WV4: 4% and WV6: 6%) were tested on the crops. Applications of WV were made on the leaves of the crops twice. Some characteristics were measured such as plant height, fresh herbage and dry matter (DM) yield, root weigth, crude protein (CP) content, cell wall components. Results indicated that applications of WV had significant and positive effect on plant height, DM yield and CP content but decreased digestibility of forage compared to the control. The highest DM yield and acceptable forage quality were obtained from the application of WV2.
