Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effects of different fertilizer applications on the grain yield and quality characteristics of hybrid maize varieties under the ecological conditions of Diyarbakır. The experiment was conducted in 2024 during the main maize growing season at the Research and Experimental Field of the Department of Field Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, Dicle University, using commercial maize varieties P2105, P1410, and M17G17, which were obtained from different seed companies. The trial was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In this study, the effects of control (no fertilizer), chemical fertilizer, organomineral fertilizer, and liquid fermented animal manure applications on plant growth, yield, and quality traits were investigated. The average plant height across the three maize varieties was 228.60 cm. The highest average plant height (237.93 cm) was recorded with chemical fertilizer application and in the P2105 variety, while the lowest (224.75 cm) was observed with liquid fermented animal manure. The average ear diameter was 4.60 cm, with the highest value (4.88 cm) observed under chemical fertilizer application. The mean grain yield per decare was 1160.97 kg da-1; the highest yield (1374.25 kg da-1) was obtained from the P2105 variety with chemical fertilizer, and the lowest (908.58 kg da-1) was recorded in the control plots. The average crude protein content in the grain was 9.20%, with the highest protein content (10.52%) observed in the control treatment and in the P1410 variety. The average starch content was 72.69%, and the highest starch content (73.71%) was determined under liquid fermented animal manure application. The mean hectoliter weight was 79.78 kg hl-1, with the highest value (80.70 kg hl-1) obtained under chemical fertilizer treatment. Based on the findings, chemical fertilizers were found to be effective in enhancing yield in maize cultivation. However, from the perspective of environmental and economic sustainability, it is recommended that integrated fertilization strategies—including organomineral fertilizers and liquid fermented animal manure—be adopted and promoted in maize farming practices.
